  • The SISU SII Post-doctoral Research Program

    Level Options, Qualifying Conditions, Publication Requirements, and Compensation


    For all levels of possible post-doc appointment, the basic requirements are that the applicant:


    • Has completed a PhD degree within the last 3 years, (or can provide clear documentation that the PhD WILL be successfully awarded by the time of candidacy) from a relevant comparative culture field such as Intercultural Communication, Social (Cultural or Cross-cultural) Psychology, Education, Cultural Studies, Cross-cultural Business/Management, or Anthropology.  


    • Demonstrates a strong research orientation (clear proposal, design, and plan) and an interest to continue work as a post-doc researcher. Past publications must be locally validated by an approved Chinese entity (which rates each for what level they qualify in meeting the entrance requirements).


    • Be under the age of 35 (according to regulations posted by the PRC Ministry of Education)


    Candidates may have completed a previous Post-doc appointment (not more than one, and evidence must be provided that the previous appointment has ended or will by the time of starting at SISU).  


    Successful candidates normally apply for two years (those meeting all the requirements can apply to finish after one year) and go through the standard procedures of:


     (1) Entry oral examination (Jinzhan Dabian) before a panel of 5 evaluators,  


     (2) Research plan approval (formal Research Topic Report = Kaiti Baogao) before a board of 3 evaluators (usually within 3-6 months of starting the program),  


     (3) Mid-term review (Zhongqi Kaohe) before a panel of 5 evaluators, and after meeting all other requirements and the submission of a substantial publishable book manuscript, then the  


     (4) Successful Post-doc final defense (Chuzhan Dabian) before a committee of 5 evaluators.


    Option 1: Tongzhao (Full time) Post-Doc:

    This is the normal application track, allowing the candidate to complete all materials and compete with other post-doc candidates. A certain quota is accepted each year by the university or related departments to begin their post-doc studies.  


    Entry Requirements:  


    Graduation from what is considered to be a World Top 100 ranked university (China’s selected QS rankings, annually updated). Candidates unable to meet this requirement can submit extra materials to the Ministry of Education for further evaluation and possible special-case approval.


    At least 2 CSSCI validated publications (Chinese key journal articles or equivalent).  


    Exit Requirements:


    • At least 2 new CSSCI (equivalent) validated publications (within the appointment period)

    • A manuscript of 100,000 Chinese words (or the equivalent of about 60,000 English) post-doc dissertation.


    Compensation:


    A basic annual stipend of 180,000 RMB (before tax)  


    Option 2: Yingjing Tongzhao (High-Level Recruitment) Full-Time Post-Doc:

    This track is for applicants who have graduated from what is clearly a World Top 100 ranked university (China’s selected QS rankings) and have already established a strong publication record (including 1, 2 or more SSCI articles). Such candidates must also exhibit capability to work as a post-doc, contribute to project applications or approved research plans, and productively conduct high-level publishable research.


    Exit Requirements:


    • Publish at least two CSSCI articles (or equivalent) in two years

    • Submit the 100,000-Chinese word (60,000 English word equivalent) research manuscript  

    • Teach a research methods module (methods training seminar) each semester.


    Compensation:  


    An annual stipend of 250,000 - 300,000 RMB (before tax) depending on qualifications and performance assessment.
